There is at present, to the best of our knowledge, no Environmental War Crimes Tribunal of Australia, even though we anticipate that one will eventually be formed in the near future. However, the images and information relating to the environmental destruction and vandalism are, unfortunately, REAL. This site was created to record and document the results of the human juggernaut of ignorance that is responsible for destroying our natural heritage, and seeks to inspire an equilibrium between the needs of human industry and endeavour with the needs of the natural environment upon whom our real prosperity, health and future lies. |
The Environmental War Crimes Tribunal of Australia, Coquun-Hunter Region Branch, seeks any information on corporations and/or individuals responsible for the following environmental war crimes against humanity and the natural world. Anyone with any information is asked to contact their nearest office of the Environment Protection Authority or local law enforcement.
TREES ARE GOOD
Energy Australia and its contractors, have apparently carried the worst "tree pruning" in the history of this region. Between it, who cuts the tops of the trees off, and Newcastle City Council, who prune from below, the result is that eventually we will have a landscape of stumps.
Both utilities appear to be unable to understand that trees grow, while electrical poles stay the same height. As was evidenced by the news report relating to Marrickville Council's complaint against Energy Australia (Network 10 - 12th July 2001) there appears to be a buck-passing exercise currently going on between Councils and the energy supplier as to who is responsible for the pruning the trees. This is an issue that must be dealt with by co-operation.
It beggars belief why energy suppliers wish to "prune" trees in such a destructive manner. We are all reliant on coal powered electricity to run our homes and industries, and the burning of fossil fuels (such as coal) is responsible for global warming, which we are told requires the planting of more trees to counteract the effects. Rather than treating trees as though they were the "enemy", they should be looking after the ones we have, and planting more of them in huge numbers!
Some possible solutions:
1. All the private and Governmental corporations, public utilities such as as power, water, council works, environmental groups and individuals concerned should come together and achieve an agreement on how to manage our urban tree and environmental heritage. Trees are beautiful assets to our communities and soften the harsh urban and industrial enviroments, provide shade and homes for other creatures, and are essential to our healthy future.
2. Power lines should be run underground. That way our streetscapes would look better and trees can grow to their natural height.
3. At the moment we are financially penalised if we wish our power to come from renewable sources such as wind generation. Why? We should be penalised for using fossil fuels and subsidised for procuring our energy needs from renewable sources.
4. If we need to prune, then do it properly.
The following images were taken in the suburb of Mayfield on the 13th July 2001, and are indicative of the abominable "tree pruning" that has been carried out across the region and state.
